Do the coastline a favor this year and instead of throwing out that Christmas tree, or burning it, recycle it.
State Ag Commissioner Mike Strain told WWL’s Ian Hoch that recycling Christmas trees is great for the state because they get buried in the marsh and help build up sediment.
“Recycling is wonderful because that is how we are going to work to rebuild our coastline,” said Strain. “Recycle Christmas trees, we should recycle everything that we can.”
But, your tree needs to be clean before you set it out on the curb or bring it to a recycling center.
“Take all of the ornaments off, all of the tinsel off, take the stand off, anything metal,” said Strain.
Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Tammany Parishes have all released recycling details.
Jefferson Parish:
Residents are asked to leave their trees out on the curb the evening of Wednesday, January 5th. They’ll get picked up at some point over the next three days.
Orleans:
Service area 1 and 2 residents should leave their trees out on the curb the night before their regularly scheduled collection day between January 10th and January 15th. French Quarter and DDD residents should put them out on the evening of Wednesday, January 12th.
