Fourteen years after a Super Bowl victory led to his late addition as Carnival season royalty in 2010, legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was once again a Mardi Gras monarch this past weekend.

Though this time around, it happened thousands of miles away from the Pelican State.

Brees presided over the annual Mardi Gras celebration in our nation’s capital. The Washington Mardi Gras Ball is an event that dates back to the 1940s and has long served as a way for Louisiana politicians to bring some local flavor to the District of Columbia while serving in Congress.

Number 9 even delighted the crowd by leading a Who Dat chant to get the festivities underway.

The event is organized and funded annually by the Mystick Krewe of Louisianians and doubles as a chance for Pelican State politicians to network, schmooze and bend the ear of their peers about projects and policies close to their hearts.

Camille Morrison was this year’s queen alongside Brees as king.
