Cops say a driver died early this morning after crashing a car in an attempt to flee from a traffic stop.
"At approximately 2:30 AM, a Kenner police officer on patrol observed a gold Honda Pilot driving eastbound in the 2200blk of Airline Hwy in Kenner in a very aggressive manner," Chief of Police Keith Conley said in a news release.
He explained that the driver of the Pilot appeared to be involved in a dispute or possible road rage with the driver of a red Ford Mustang on Airline.
"The Kenner police officer got behind the Pilot and activated his overhead lights and siren," the chief detailed.
Conley says that the driver refused to stop and fled.
"The officer pursued the vehicle which turned north on Taylor Street at a high rate of speed. The vehicle crossed the eastbound lanes of West Metairie at its intersection with Taylor, launched over the curb and over the west Metairie canal and crashed into the canal bank."
With smoke coming from under the hood, officers removed the driver from the vehicle and initiated CPR.
"The Kenner Fire Department and East Jefferson EMS also responded and rendered medical aid. The driver was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounce deceased."
