Speaking at New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s early afternoon press conference, Entergy President and CEO Deanna Rodriguez says the company has made a great leap forward in restoring power to New Orleans.
“Overnight we overcame a huge hurdle,” Rodriguez said. “At approximately 1am Entergy crews turned on power for some customers in New Orleans East with generation supplied by the New Orleans Power Station. This is only the first step in bringing back power to the whole region.”
Rodriguez says it was a combined effort of bringing in a power line from East and energizing it with power from the new power station at Michoud.
Then she continued on progress getting made in restoring power in New Orleans.
“To date, we have restored about 11,500 customers in the New Orleans area,” Rodriguez beamed. “The first customers to be restored were about 3,500 including homes in Little Woods and critical care customers including the VA Hospital and New Orleans Fire Department.”
Rodriguez says the New Orleans Power Station at Michoud is designed to provide power to the city of New Orleans even when high voltage transmission lines are down.
She calls the success of bringing New Orleans Power Station a significant milestone for the utility.
