It’s the peak of the spring seafood season as Lenten Super Weekend kicks off today with Good Friday. Gulf Seafood Institute Chairman Harlon Pearce told WWL that means prices for crawfish will be at their zenith over the next three days, at least until the start of the next season.
“As we get off of the Easter holidays and we get into the normal situation you’ll begin to see prices drop,” said Pearce, who added that the price per pound of crawfish should fall about 50 cents after Easter. “Barring any bad weather, any storms we should see a good situation with that.”
Pearce adds April also kicks off shrimp season.
Oysters and crab are at incredibly inflated prices right now, but Pearce warns that’s unlikely to change any time soon due to supply factors, inflation, and post-Ida impacts.
If you’re looking for seafood today and this weekend but don’t want to break the bank Pearce recommends going for some Louisiana catfish.
“Wild catfish, that’s the story of the day,” said Pearce. “Good Louisiana, Des Allemands type catfish is the best you can get.”
