A new plan announced by the Jefferson Parish School District would see one longtime New Orleans area high school shuttered, its students dispersed among other the parish’s remaining schools.

Wednesday, those students who would be affected staged a walk-out.

Some students made signs, and many were heard shouting “Save Grace King” during the brief protest, according to WWL-TV.

Grace King High School in Metairie, La., has served the students of Jefferson Parish since 1968 – first as an all-girls school before transitioning to become coed in the 1980s. However, it could be in the midst of its final school year if the proposed reduction plan is adopted.

The recommendation for Grace King’s closure is due to a sharp decrease in enrollment across the entire Jefferson Parish school system. If Grace King is closed, its students would be split between two other high schools – Bonnabel and Riverdale – and its campus would be allocated to Haynes Academy, which would relocate from its current location.

While Grace King would not be the only high school closed as part of the plan. Helen Cox would also be shut down along with five other lower schools: Gretna Middle, G.T. Woods Elementary, Joshua Butler Elementary, Mildred Harris Elementary and Washington Elementary.

The proposal will be put to a vote on April 5.
