Just because the school bell is ringing doesn’t mean summer is over. According to a new study from the Family Travel Association, 57% of parents say they’re still going on vacation, even after classes have started.
Certified travel agent Vernitra Shivers says she’s not surprised.
“The cruise market especially is just too good to pass up,” she explains.
Families are saving as much as a thousand dollars on trips and the experiences, she says, are priceless.
Shivers, who’s also a former educator, points out that some parents see their kids’ allotted absences as a kind of PTO, cashing them in for family adventures.
Others, she says, simply can’t shake the idea that school is supposed to start after Labor Day, and they’re holding onto that old tradition with one more week at the beach.
“Parents aren’t just chasing deals, they want their kids to have certain experiences, and they’re willing to take the chance. The homework can wait, but the memories can’t.”
So, while classrooms may be filling up, don’t be surprised if the airports and cruise terminals are too.
For many families, summer isn’t over until the last suitcase is unpacked.
