Timber among few Louisiana industries that may benefit from tariffs

Are there any parts of the Louisiana economy that may come out ahead amid President Trump's steep import taxes?

It's not many, says Louisiana economist Dr. Loren Scott.

"It's tough to find one, that's why economists in general are against tariffs," said Scott. "We think this is a really bad plan."

But, he says the Louisiana timber industry may be one of the few poised to benefit.

"They will not have as much competition, number one, from wood coming in from Canada; and number 2, plywood coming in from China," Scott explained.

Commercial seafood producers, shrimpers especially, are also celebrating the punitive measures placed on their foreign competition.

But other than that, Scott is hard-pressed to think of anyone else who isn't going to be hurt -- except maybe Korean automaker Hyundai, which just announced a $5 billion steel plant in Louisiana to supply its Alabama and Georgia-based auto factories.
