First Look: Bucktown Harbor revitalization

Bucktown will soon be a destination for recreation and fun after a $10 million master plan transforms the Jefferson Parish lakefront.

Councilwoman Jennifer Van Vrancken will unveil the new Bucktown Harbor Master Plan today.

These are design renderings of what the Bucktown area will look like. Construction is expected to begin next year.

In the late 1990s, Jefferson Parish reclaimed lake bottom to build Bucktown Harbor Park & Marina; but the grassy waterfront remained largely overlooked and underutilized with most residents unaware of its existence.

“Last year, we opened the wetland ‘birdwalk’ which is a great way for people to experience the lake and marsh,” explained Councilwoman Van Vrancken. “Now, we’re ready to show the future for the whole park with some projects ready to be built beginning next year. It’s really exciting! Everything will be recreational, educational, and fun. We want to build something remarkable that showcases our community’s history and culture, something we all can be proud of.”

The Bucktown Harbor Wetland Birdwalk opened in May last year, after nine months of construction overwater. The next projects to be built are a new entryway, kayak launch, living shoreline, wave attenuation jetty, and an overlook pavilion.
