Flare-ups giving firefighters fits at Garyville Marathon Plant

Firefighters remain on the Marathon Petroleum facility near Garyville more than 24 hours after a chemical leak and fire caused an evacuation near the plant.

According to St. John the Baptist Parish officials, much of the fire has been extinguished, but flare-up are happening occasionally. Residents in the area may see intermittent smoke from the plant while firefighters continue to battle the blaze and as those flare-ups happen. Officials say they are confident that “there is no risk of additional fire.”

Meanwhile, officials are still monitoring the air quality as a precaution. Officials say they have not yet seen any negative impacts on the air quality in the area.
