Equipment to help planes land at Louis Armstrong International Airport in the fog is offline, forcing flight cancellations on Wednesday.
The massive flight cancellations at MSY were made worse by airport equipment, designed to help pilots land in the fog, which was offline.
A spokesperson tells Nola.com that the Instrument Landing System, a short-range radio navigation system, was offline while the airport expands one of its taxiways. The equipment is offline until upgrades to the taxiway are completed sometime next year.
The airport canceled 42 flights and delayed 20 flights due to this morning’s dense fog. Airport officials say conditions at the airport have improved and flights are once again safely arriving.
