Former New Orleans Police Sgt. Todd Morrell pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to six counts of wire fraud, in a scheme to get paid by the department even though he wasn't actually working.
Morrell, at one time the leader of NOPD's bomb squad, would fill out time sheets claiming he was engaged in police work when he was instead working a private detail for the New Orleans Fairgrounds, or while racing cars at NOLA Motorsports in Avondale.
Prosecutors say at time, Morrell claimed to be working for NOPD when he was instead racing cars in Austin, Texas.
Morrell, 57, could get up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in February.
