Fire fighters remained on the scene after battling a massive four-alarm fire Wednesday evening.

It happened about 7 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Chef Menteur Highway.

The New Orleans Fire Department reports when fire crews arrived a large portion of the building was engulfed in flames.

Because of the number of units in the complex firefighters on scene quickly called in additional alarms as they began evacuating people out of their homes. Police officers with the New Orleans Police Department also helped in getting people safely out.

“Early reports were that there may have been a total of 175 residents living at this complex at the time of the fire. It is unclear yet if any of the complex will be habitable tonight. The American Red Cross of Louisiana is on scene and working to address the housing needs of residents temporarily displaced by the fire,” said the NOFD in a report.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no reports of any injuries.
