Fourth candidate reenters NOPD Superintendent race

NOPD
New Orleans Police Department

A semifinalist who dropped out of the New Orleans Police Superintendent's race is now back in the running for the job.

"David Franklin was contacted, and I will be moving forward with interviewing Mr. Franklin," Mayor LaToya Cantrell said during a Wednesday media briefing.

According to Cantrell, Franklin agreed to reenter the race for the top position in the NOPD. This comes nearly two weeks after Franklin exited the race ahead of the International Association of Police Chiefs announcing who its three finalists in the race would be.

Last week, the Cantrell Administration said the mayor considered Franklin to be a finalist despite his decision to bow out of the race. During a media briefing, Cantrell said she would contact Franklin to ask him to reconsider his decision. That effort, according to Cantrell, worked.

"What I'm offering is that he made my list that I wanted to interview," Cantrell said. "Now, I've reached back and informed him that he made my list and that I really wanted to interview him. That has been received, and we're moving forward with planning and scheduling an inteview."

Franklin is a former chief of staff of the Albuquerque, New Mexico, Police Department. He also spent time as the assistant chief of the University of Texas at Arlington Police Department and as a captain in the Texas Department of Public Safety. He joins Thedrick Andres, Anne Kirkpatrick, and interim NOPD chief Michelle Woodfork in the final round of the job search.

"I will be moving forward with moving all the complements I spoke of earlier. I do not have dates to share with you at this time, but I am definitely in the process."
