Garic: Veterans - You are my heroes!

Every November 11th I get a little emotional.  I think about all the military veterans who served and continue to serve this magnificent country.  Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard veterans are my heroes.

When you are a veteran, you reflect on those you served with - your teammates, your partners, your brothers & sisters for life.  You also think about those who served before you, all those devoted men and women who followed, as well as those who will carry the flag and continue to give their best to our country.  I admire their courage, selflessness and sacrifice they’ve made for OUR United States of America!

Current active duty military members and veterans are the very reason I get to cover sports for a living and co-host a sports talk show every weekday here on WWL.  I owe my freedom to pursue my dreams to them.

Being in the military is a thankless job, and, frankly, not a well-paying job for most.  We don’t do it for praise or the money.  We do it for you...our fellow Americans...who are worth it, every ounce of it!  We do it because it’s honorable. We do it because we truly love the red, white & blue.

I wouldn’t be where I am today had it not been for my decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corp twenty three years ago... then rise up in the ranks to sergeant. The military runs deep in my family!  My father served in the United States Army for twenty years.  My Grandfather lied about his age and enlisted in the Army during World War II.  At 16 he was on battlefields in the pacific!  Can you imagine being 16 and fighting in combat?  Magnanimous!

If you haven’t served, that’s ok. Just try and thank the active duty military member or veteran in your life. Shoot them a text or email thanking them for their service. Or, better yet, call them. It would make their week. They deserve it

Some of my friends ask me why I get a little emotional talking about Veterans Day.  My eyes are welling up with tears as I write this.  The emotion I feel...we feel...is pride!  The emotion is accomplishment!  Unless you’ve done it, you may not understand. It’s a common bond between my fellow veteran brothers and sisters.  No matter what happens to me in life, NOBODY can ever take my honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corp away from me.  Nobody!   It’s the greatest achievement of my life!  Most veterans would tell you the same.

Just because we served doesn’t mean we love this country any more than those of you who have not served.  It just means we felt it was our duty!

In closing, THANK YOU!  Thank you to our active duty service members and veterans!  You are the reason I can live life free and happy!  You made a tremendous sacrifice for me and my family!  God bless you!  Semper Fidelis!
