While some drivers across Louisiana are seeing just a bit of relief at the gas pump, they should probably stay wary. Eric Smith, Professor at Tulane’s Institute for Energy, says consumers can expect a rollercoaster ride when it comes to gas prices moving forward.

Currently, gas prices average around $3.59 per gallon in Louisiana. According to Professor Smith, the state’s drivers can expect that number to exceed $4 per gallon moving forward. “The prices will go up and down depending on what choke point is being the most restricted. In general, I think we’ll keep our prices below $5 or so for the next year while we try to rebuild our inventories,” Smith adds.

While Louisiana drivers may be frustrated, the Tulane professor adds a bit of perspective. “If you’re in parts of the country where you have heavy imports of crude oil and refined products like California, those prices are very high. In northern Alaska, the price of gasoline is over $9 a gallon,” notes Smith.
