Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry announced Monday that the state will open a "transitional center" on France Road, off of the Industrial Canal, to provide services for homeless people in New Orleans.
An announcement from the governor's office says state agencies will work to help the homeless find housing vouchers, medical, and mental health treatment.
"When I assumed office, I made a commitment to take on difficult issues. Rampant homelessness has been a longstanding challenge for Orleans Parish, and I refuse to continue ineffective and costly policies," said Landry. "It is in the best interest of every citizen’s safety and security to give the unhoused humane and safe shelter as we begin to welcome the world to the City of New Orleans for both Super Bowl LIX and Mardi Gras."
Individuals with jobs but no where to live will be prioritized for housing vouchers.
The governor's office says they are also willing to provide bus or rail transportation out-of-state for homeless individuals who do not want help finding permanent housing.
A spokesperson for the governor's office said no one is forced to leave, but they are working with people to help them identify where they want to go.
