Guilty plea from man who killed priest, church worker in Covington

Guilty plea from man who killed priest, church worker in Covington

Antonio Tyson admitted guilt in the murders of a St. Tammany Parish priest and a church worker, the district attorney's office announced Tuesday.

Tyson fatally beat Fr. Otis Young and Ruth Prats in November 2022. He then set their bodies on fire.

Their charred remains were found behind a business in downtown Covington.

Investigators determined Tyson broke into Prats' home and attacker her and Young. After burning his victims' bodies, police say he stole Prats' car.

Police arrested Tyson after finding him in that vehicle not long after his crimes.

Tyson avoids a possible death sentence with his guilty plea. He will instead be sentenced to life in prison at hard labor without parole for the two counts of murder, and 40 years in prison for an obstruction of justice charge.
