Drug dealers being charged with murder after someone fatally overdoses is not new, but in Hammond, Louisiana, police are taking a new tactic after a Southeastern Louisiana University student survived a fentanyl overdose -- attempted murder charges.
"The new thing that we're stepping up is that we're going to charge these criminals that are selling the dope that are having people get poisoned, come close to losing their lives...with attempted murder charges," said Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron.
The district attorney's office has been gracious to get on with us," Bergeron continued. "We're willing to be the pioneers that go after the drug dealers in this way."
Bergeron says they have booked three suspects on attempted murder, as well as narcotics charges, after the Southeastern student was treated with NARCAN after a near-fatal overdose.
