Among the city of New Orleans' money-saving moves that show early signs of working: changing the wiring of street lights. Even New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno seems surprised at how well it's working.
With the city's street lights often the target of thieves looking to hock copper wiring, the mayor had the city's public works department replace it with much less valuable aluminum.
She said while there is still an issue of the panels on the light poles being busted open, the would-be thieves aren't liking what they find:
"The vandals are still coming in and breaking the panels, but now they're seeing that (the wiring) is aluminum, and they don't take it," she told WWL's Newell Normand.
Moreno said it shows that being willing to do things differently can lead to good things for the city.
