Why it's good for New Orleans that state officials refuse to help with finances

Every day it seems like we hear more bad news about the city's budget future, but is it as bad as it sounds?

"I think things have greatly improved," said Louisiana Legislative Auditor Mike Waguespack.

Waguespack has been practically embedded in New Orleans City Hall ever since Mayor Helena Moreno took office, helping the new administration find money sources the previous administration seemed to have forgotten.

And Waguespack says there may be a silver lining to the state bond commission's apparent opposition to letting the city borrow more money.

"I think it's better that they didn't go in front of the bond commission because it's going to require them to really tighten up the belt some more, keep turning over those couch cushions and finding those pots of money to use for cash flow," he said.

And Waguespack hinted there may be more sources of cash flow for the city the administration has yet to recognize.

"There some other things on the table in the future that I think will bring in even further cash infusions," he teased, though Waguespack said he's not at liberty to disclose what those "other things" might be.
