One of the winningest high school football coaches in Louisiana history is dead after a crash in Tangipahoa Parish.

State troopers say a pickup truck hit Charles Baglio, Jr., while he was walking along U-S 51 near Kohnke Hill Road around 8 p.m. Friday night. Baglio, 81, died at the scene.

According to investigators, Baglio had been involved in another crash in which he crossed into the path of another car while crossing U. S. 51 and was struck. Investigators say Baglio got out of his car to check on the driver of the other vehicle. According to troopers, an oncoming truck hit Baglio as he was walking back to his own vehicle.

In 22 seasons at Independence High School, Baglio led his program to nine district championships and two state championship appearances.
He finished his career there with 205 victories. He went on to serve 20 years on the LSU football staff, working as an assistant under Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed Orgeron. During that time, he was part of three national championship squads.
