A severe thunderstorm blew across the Southshore this morning. It knocked down utility poles, power lines and fences on the Westbank.
"This is Mother Nature saying, 'Hello,' once again in a mean way; and it is something we just have to deal with," Jefferson Parish Councilman Scott Walker said after surveying the damage.
He said cleanup could take a while in Marrero.
"No real damage that we are seeing outside of power lines and some fences. I haven't seen any roof damage or structural damage to homes," Walker told WWL TV. "There is damage... that is going to get in the way and cause traffic problems. If you can, stay off the roads. The fire department is out, Entergy is out trying to fix poles or reenergize poles."
At last report, there were about 16,000 power outages in the metro New Orleans area.
In the Desire neighborhood a tree fell on a home. That was in the 3200 block of St. Ferdinand.
There are no reports of any injuries across the region.
Nola Ready also reports standing water on more than a dozen streets. Some underpasses were closed as pumps worked to catch up.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory until 12:45pm.
A flood watch continues through Thursday evening.
