The largest sugar refining facility in the Western Hemisphere is getting $785 million makeover.

“For 117 years, Domino has been refining sugar in St. Bernard Parish. Now, with its largest capital investment ever, Domino’s parent, American Sugar Refining (ASR), is committing to the next 100 years,” GNO Inc. President and CEO Michael Hecht announced in a newletter.

He says the project will introduce modernized refining capabilities to the plant along the Mississippi River.

“The project will help retain 500 jobs, while creating over 50 new direct and indirect jobs.”

Hecht says that Greater New Orleans, Inc. worked closely with ASR, Louisiana Economic Development, and St. Bernard officials on regulations, incentives, and workforce to help secure the win for St. Bernard and the region.

"Domino Sugar has operated in Arabi for over 100 years and has consistently been recognized as one of St. Bernard Parish’s top employers and taxpayers,” St. Bernard Parish President Louis Pomes said. "This project represents another significant investment in St. Bernard, helping to secure existing jobs while creating new ones. I am extremely proud to support American Sugar Refining, Inc. while they continue to make St. Bernard Parish a better place to live and work."

GNO Inc. says that construction is underway, with completion of the first phase and operations anticipated in 2028.
