
The Orleans Parish Constable gunned down Friday night before a playoff match between Warren Easton and Carver High Schools has been identified.
Thirty-Eight-year-old Martinus Mitchum was working security at the match when he responded to an altercation between another security person and the suspected shooter.
The suspect reportedly got into the confrontation over his refusal to wear a mask inside the gym.
While trying to escort the man from the campus, he reportedly pulled a gun and shot Mitchum once in the chest.
Mitchum died at University Medical Center some time later.
The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate reports Mitchum was a reserve deputy constable with the Second City Court. He also served as a member of the Tulane University Police Force, was an office with Loyola University’s police force and graduated from the Slidell Police Department basic reserve police academy.
The man accused of shooting Mitchum is identified as 35-year-old John Shallerhorn.
Moments after reportedly shooting Martinus Mitchum in the chest, Shallerhorn was arrested by members of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office who were also working security at the Carver-Easton game.
Shallerhorn was turned over to New Orleans Police.
The suspect has a number of minor previous brushes with law enforcement.
