New Orleans firefighters say illegal dumping put four state workers in the hospital this morning.
According to the New Orleans Fire Department, shortly after 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development personnel were removing drums of chemicals illegally dumped under the Woodland Highway bridge in Algiers, when one of the drums ruptured, spilling muriatic acid.
Four workers were overcome by fumes. They were treated and released from a local hospital.
An NOFD hazardous materials unit set up a 100-foot perimeter. The haz-mat team and one NOFD engine company are on the scene while the spill is cleaned.
