A high school educator murdered in Treme, restaurant patrons at Dooky Chase shot as a young man is murdered, and several cars and an apartment set ablaze in the Bywater. Is New Orleans in the grip of a crime spree?

The week's headlines have been dominated by crime, but New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick says it is too early to say crime is trending up after two straight years of declines.

"We're just two, three weeks now into the new year," Kirkpatrick said. "We haven't seen trends or an uptick necessarily."

The chief said this early in the new year, they haven't seen anything they can define as a trend.

"You don't want to be thrown by percentages when your raw numbers are very low."

The Metro Crime Commission tracks crime in the city.

The latest numbers they gathered show that the first 18 days of the year saw four homicides in New Orleans.

Since then, there have been at least four more homicides in just two days.
