Louisiana State Police say authorities are working to determine if they can reopen the elevated I-55 between Ponchatoula and LaPlace.
"Tests will determine the extent of the damage and the scope of repairs needed," LSP posted. "A comprehensive structural inspection will take place once the bridge surface is completely clear of debris, diesel, and other chemicals."
Crews were hoping to complete bridge deck scans soon to provide additional data regarding the integrity of the damaged concrete.
Troopers now say eight people lost their lives in the massive collision amid fog and smoke that included at least 168 vehicles. Cops updated those numbers Tuesday night.
"Troopers were notified of an additional victim of the crash who died at a local hospital, increasing the fatality count to 8 individuals. The ongoing investigation has determined that at least 168 vehicles were involved in the crash, and 63 individuals received injuries in the incident."
All of the vehicles have now been removed from both sides of I-55, and DOTD has begun the cleanup of the roadway.
"The reopening of the roadway will be carefully coordinated with LSP and DOTD personnel, pending the results of the inspections."
