Jefferson 911 operator fired, arrested, accused of keeping $1.2 million mistakenly deposited in account

fired

A 911 dispatcher in Jefferson Parish is accused of using a million-dollar financial mistake to go on a spending spree.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says it fired 33-year-old Kelyn Spadoni and arrested her for theft, bank fraud, and illegal transmission of monetary funds.

According to the charges, Charles Schwab & Co. mistakenly deposited $1.2 million inter her brokerage account. Authorities say Spadoni then transferred that money to another account and used the funds to buy a car and a house.

The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports Charles Schwab & Co. is suing Spadoni in federal court to try to get the money back. It reports that Schwab claims in the lawsuit that it meant to transfer $82.56 into Spadoni's account, but accidentally deposited $1,205,619.

When the brokerage tried to reclaim the money, it could not gain access to the funds. The sheriff's office says that's because the money had already been transferred out of the account.
