Jefferson Parish is on pace to set a new record low for homicides.
Sheriff Joe Lopinto told WWL's Tommy Tucker that the annual murder rate typically ranges between the 20s and the 60s. This year, he says, the parish will fall well below those numbers.
"Generally speaking, we average around 40 (murders per year)," Lopinto said. "This year, we're at eight for the year through October."
Lopinto credits technological advances to helping the sheriff's office drive down crime in his parish.
"Drones, license plate readers, you name it," Lopinto said. "Technology gives us the opportunity to solve crime quicker."
According to Lopinto, that technology stops crime before it can happen.
"We have a limited number of criminals," Lopinto said. "We can drive those numbers down with the technology that's given to us today."
