Called a true champion of justice, Gaylor Spiller, president of the Jefferson Parish branch of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People passed away on Friday.

Spiller held the position from 2015.


Madam Spiller served honorably in the Louisiana Army National Guard Reserves from 1973 to 1988, raising to the rank of Sergeant First Class.

She received an honorable discharge when leaving the Reserves.

An alumni of Southern University at New Orleans, Spiller earned an ABA in 1979.

In private life, Spiller concentrated on legal work and worked with people of all ethnicities, genders, and backgrounds, according to WWL-TV.

On word of her passing, Reverend Kevin Gabriel of the St. Bernard Parish chapter of the NAACP stated:

“We lost a good fighter.  Well done, take your rest.”
