Jefferson Parish population is getting older

Demographic changes in Jefferson Parish have some parish leaders concerned about the future. Jefferson Parish is getting older.

"Nothing wrong with that, other than as we age we tend to spend less," said Jefferson Business Council Chairman Philip Rebowe.

Rebowe says fewer children in Jefferson is why the school system recently announced consolidations and closings of some campuses. And younger adults have been moving away.

"Especially that younger age group, that 18 to 40 age group, that, you know, is pretty mobile nowadays, and have fewer children and are willing to move around," he said.

Rebowe tells WWL's Newell Normand it's an issue that needs attention.

"I think that's something we're looking at, all the business groups," he said, "and how to address that situation."
