The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says it has made million-dollar drug bust.
It happened Monday on Tolmas Drive near the Metairie lakefront. Anthony Caruso, 41, is facing a litany of drugs and weapons charges in connection with the case.
Sheriff Joe Lopinto says the drugs seized include homemade steroids and weight loss drugs.
"This guy was literally making it out of his house," Lopinto said during a Wednesday news conference. "If anybody remembers the show Breaking Bad, that's what this was: beakers for him to be able to mix these powders together in order to have it for resale."
According to Lopinto, the bust turned up a hoard of guns and the equipment Caruso allegedly used to make the drugs.
"He was taking powder and mixing it with the chemicals there on the floor, repackaging it, and selling them," Lopinto said. "We don't even know if that's insulin in there. We've got to get to that point to see what each one is. It might be packaged and look like GLP-1, but it may not be that on the inside."
According to Lopinto, his deputies now have to figure out what exactly the drugs they seized are.
"This will become a drug chemist's nightmare over the next few months to be able to test all of the different drugs that are on here," Lopinto said.
Lopinto adds this a cautionary tale for people who buy steroids or GLP medications online instead of going through a pharmacist.
"You're taking a chance that a guy in his kitchen is mixing it properly before you put it in your body, and that's the biggest issue I have here," Lopinto said. "Just because they say it is doesn't necessarily mean it is, and that's a big difference."
