JPSO deputy shoots at stolen car during chase; two arrested

JPSO
Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office

A chase of stolen car that started in Jefferson Parish ended in New Orleans after a JPSO deputy shot at the vehicle involved in that chase.

According to Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto, the chase began around 5:50 p.m. Monday when deputies were notified of a stolen car on Airline Drive near the Jefferson/Orleans Parish Line. Lopinto says his deputies found the car near the corner of Jefferson Highway and Monticello Avenue. That’s when, Lopinto says, the deputies tried to stop the stolen vehicle. Lopinto says the driver refused to stop and led the deputies on a chase into the city of New Orleans.

Lopinto says the car eventually stopped near the corner of South Claiborne and Jefferson Avenues. According to Lopinto, one of the deputies shot at the driver several times when approaching the car. Lopinto did not say why the deputy fired his gun. No one was struck by the bullets.

According to Lopinto, the driver of the stolen car took off once again after the shots were fired. The JPSO deputies, Lopinto says, continued to pursue the car until it crashed into poles near South Miro and Joseph Streets in Broadmoor.

Lopinto says a deputy was injured by a live wire that fell during the crash. That deputy was taken to a hospital. His condition was not disclosed.

Two men inside the car were arrested. Lopinto did not say what charges those men are facing.

According to Lopinto, the New Orleans Police Department will investigate the deputy-involved shooting.
