A woman is in jail and a Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy is under investigation after a car chase during which the deputy fired his gun.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on Houma Boulevard between Veterans Boulevard and Manhattan Street in Metairie.

According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, the woman drove away from a deputy who tried to stop her for speeding. The woman, Lopinto says, later rammed her car into several sheriff's deputies' units. That led a deputy to start shooting at the woman. Nobody was hit by gunfire.

The chase ended after deputies blocked the woman's car near Cleary Avenue and Veterans Boulevard, causing the woman to hit a curb.

Deputies later learned that four children were inside the woman's car, all of them unrestrained. Those children were taken to the hospital for for a precautionary checkup.

The woman, later identified as 31-year-old Desiree Mallery of Metairie, is facing OWI, aggravated flight, and aggravated criminal damage, and child endangerment charges.
