The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says it has thrown a porch pirate in the brig.

Deputies say 23-year-old Matthew Lewis of Metairie faces multiple theft charges for a string of package thefts across Jefferson Parish's east bank throughout December.

"The stolen property included everything from children's toys and a bassinet to lawn equipment and men's clothing" said sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Jason Rivarde. "Several of the victims said that the stolen packages were intended to be given as Christmas presents."

The sheriff's office says it had identified Lewis as a suspect and had him under surveillance. Deputies stopped him on December 29 and reported finding a number of packages in his vehicle.

"Lewis admitted to stealing the packages and profiting from them by either returning the items inside or selling them on the street," said Rivarde.

Investigators are working to identify victims and return their stolen goods to them.
