Judge disqualifies NOLA mayor candidate
Orleans Parish Communications District

A New Orleans Civil District Court judge Monday disqualified former 911 director Tyrell Morris from running for mayor.

Judge Jennifer Medley ruled Morris did not meet the eligibility requirements to run for office and granted a voter's request to remove his name from the ballot.

State records showed Morris failed to file Louisiana income tax returns in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Morris' disqualification from the mayor's race comes as he awaits trial on charges of malfeasance in office, impersonating a police officer, and other charges stemming from the incident that led to his resignation in 2023 as the head of the Orleans Parish Communications District, which overseas the city's 911 system.

Morris had been in a wreck with his taxpayer-owned vehicle, but did not notify NOPD and get a police report.

A WWL-TV investigation found that Morris may have altered public records after-the-fact to make it appear as if a police report was not needed.
