Jefferson Parish is seeing a spike in fictitious tags in the area. The uptick is troubling as it is an indicator of bad actors from the driver to those who sold the car.

Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley says that the problem is bigger than just a few transposed numbers on a car's license plate.

“I consider this the number one threat to our community.”t

The chief told WWL's Newell Normand that often behind those fake plates are non-licensed drivers, even undocumented immigrants, and no registration or insurance only compounds the negative outcomes.

The chief says that often behind that fake plates are non-licensed drivers, even undocumented immigrants, and no registration or insurance only compounds the negative outcomes.

“When they hit somebody there’s no way to make that person whole. It’s just become a danger to the travelling public.”

Chief Conley says they have been digging into the sudden crop of fictitious and, upon further review, he and his department may have uncovered a larger network is responsible.

“It seems they are renting these vehicles to Day Laborers on a daily basis for cash.”

Conley says they have found almost a fleet of cars in parking lots and all with no proper paperwork. Meaning, there is paperwork presented but none of it has actually been through the proper channels.

“We have reached out to some of the notarial businesses listed on these vehicles and it’s all fraudulent. One office in particular, up in Tickfaw, says they haven’t issued a temporary tag since 2018.”

Chief Conley says they will leave no stone unturned in the investigation of the fake tags. He says there is also a black market for the tags and residents are taking up the offer.
