Lafourche Parish authorities are lifting the mandatory evacuation at noon today, allowing residents home for the first time since Saturday, August 28, the day before Hurricane Ida hit.
The sheriff's office says they will be manning checkpoints, and people must show proof of residency, such as their driver's licenses, to gain access.
Deputies will also be enforcing a curfew from 7 p.m. through 6 a.m.
Authorities are also warning returning residents that there are many challenging infrastructure issues that will make living conditions difficult, from areas without potable water to no stores being open.
"There is no clean water access from Raceland to the South Lafourche area. There is no power in the parish, and it will not be restored for some time. Nearly all communication is down, including cell phone service parish-wide," the sheriff's office cautions. "Bring all supplies you need to self-sustain while you are here."
