The US Senate race in Louisiana is headed to runoff elections.
Congresswoman Julia Letlow won the most votes in the Republican Primary Saturday, but didn't get enough support to avoid a runoff.
“That’s another testament to the President’s endorsement, how powerful it is in Louisiana; that we were still able to garner 45% of the vote, despite the negativity,” Letlow said.
Letlow (above, right) got 179,876 votes, 45% of the total.
She faces State Treasurer John Fleming. He won 28% of the primary vote with 113,428 ballots cast for him.
Fleming (above, left) did not hold a campaign event.
The runoff is June 27th.
The winner of the GOP runoff faces the winner of the Democratic runoff.
In that race, Jamie Davis takes on Gary Crockett, but analysts by-and-large agree that neither Democrat could win in the General Election on November 3rd.
Meanwhile Senator Bill Cassidy conceded the loss Saturday night.
“I’ve had the privilege of representing the State of Louisiana for 12 years. I have been able to participate in democracy. And when you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to. But you don’t pout, you don’t whine; you don’t claim that the election was stolen,” Cassidy said.
President Donald Trump campaigned against Cassidy and endorsed Letlow. Cassidy voted to impeach Trump during his first term.
