The Orleans Public School Board’s school renaming initiative is in its final stages of completion.
At Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, school board leaders were presented the list of schools selected to be considered for renaming because of their affiliation with Confederate leaders or Segregation.
Director of Community Relations for NOLA Public Schools, Justin McCorkle presented the list to council members and detailed the processes by which the schools were selected.
Below is the list of schools to be considered for renaming.

How schools were selected
A Historian Review Team made up of a diverse group of seven local historians researched all named school facilities in Orleans Parish and determined if the name falls into any of three categories; Slave Owners, Confederate Officials, and Segregation Supporters. If the school is named after a person fitting any of the three vetting categories then the school was placed on the list which will be presented to the school board for review and renaming.
Student and Public Feedback
The Review Team welcomed feedback from students and the public. Public feedback was received by submitting a form online or through the mail, listing the school facility name, location, and a brief reason why they feel the school should or should not be renamed.
How students and the public can join the discussion
