A kennel at the Northshore Humane Society was damaged in a fire yesterday afternoon, and luckily all the animals at the shelter were removed unharmed from the building before the fire spread. However, with the facility now in disrepair from fire damage, those animals need new, temporary homes. As this cold snap settles in, the facility has been left without adequate heating and local residents are urged to consider fostering one of the dogs impacted by the fire during this time of need. The Humane Society continues to raise money toward building a new facility, so this fire comes at a particularly rough time for the organization.
The cause of the fire is believed to be a heater malfunction that caused flames to break out in Kennel A around noon of Tuesday afternoon. Those flames then spread to other parts of the building, where damage became extensive. Staff were able to quickly evacuate all the animals with no injuries reported to people or those potential pets. However, the damage to the building and its need for repairs will make it hard to shelter the affected animals.
While the average foster time is roughly two weeks, that time can vary and Northshore Humane Society is flexible and in need of any volunteers available to take on the dogs in need during this transitional period. Information on how to foster an animal can be found at northshorehumane.org and the Humane Society will provide those who are kind enough to foster with all the supplies needed, including food and medical care.
