Local seafood growing fat and plentiful

Our first spring weekend is here, and spring seafood is looking good.

"$3.49 pound, for nice crawfish," said Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain. He says that was just one store. If you shop around, you may find lower prices, depending on size.

And crawfish aren't the only shellfish that local shoppers may find to their liking.

"I've seen shrimp at $4.00 a pound," said Strain. "As we get closer to Good Friday, you will see probably a little uptick in price, but right now, it's very affordable."

Strain says our local seafood has been getting all the nutrients needed to grow big an plentiful.

"I think all the weather patterns have been just right," he said, "so crabs are nice, shrimp and crawfish are really nice and exceptional, and there's plenty of oysters."

Strain said prices may start rising as demand picks ups as we get closer and closer to Good Friday.
