London Lodge shut down and torn down

Officials today celebrated the demolition of a decades-old crime hot spot in New Orleans.

The London Lodge on Airline Highway near the Parish line "Ain't Der No More."

District Attorney Jason Williams says closing and tearing down the motel makes the city safer.

"Shuttering the London Lodge was a critical step in shutting down a web of notorious criminal activity."

Williams told reporters that redevelopment plans are in the works.

Director of Strategic Initiatives Daniel Shanks added, "Today a location once synonymous with violence and mayhem is reduced to rubble."

Williams says there is more to come from the New Orleans Data-informed community engagement.

"NO DICE will be turning its attention to the French Quarter and downtown," The DA promised.

"This is a win for public safety and human dignity."

City Council President Helena Moreno stressed this is just one tool New Orleans will use going forward.  Others, she stressed, could include jail time for bad property owners.

"There were several other locations that we discussed, and we others that we will be moving forward with."
