Louisiana drivers are more likely to die in car crashes because of speeding.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, or NHTSA, speed is a factor in 30 percent of Louisiana highway fatalities.

Gregory Fischer with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says that's above the national average, and it has been going up in Louisiana since 2019.

"Whereas this wasn't necessarily a problem for us five years ago, it has sort of grown into an issue," Fischer said.

Fischer said young men in particular stand out in the statistics.

"Males 15 to 20, we're seeing 36 percent," he said, and he said these aren't all highway-speed crashes: more than 82 percent of these fatal crashes happen on Louisiana roadways other than the interstate.
