The United States Senate race may be over, but Tuesday's closer-than-expected result may have given us a preview of the next big statewide election.

"The race for governor starts today," LAPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford said.

Davis's narrow loss to Republican Julia Letlow in yesterday's Senate election could give him an early boost in the gubernatorial race. Alford told WWL's Tommy Tucker that Democrats laid the groundwork for a potentially competitive race next year.

"Democrats went in September and October and outregistered both Republicans and independents," Alford said. "Democrats are organized. This was very methodical. I think a lot of people missed all this groundwork that was happening, and I think they are going to stay focused on the governorship."

Alford says in addition to Davis, Alexandria State Senator Jay Luneau and former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu are potential opponents for Governor Jeff Landry. However, Alford notes that anyone who runs against Landry faces an uphill battle.

"He's going to have an incredible war chest. He's not going to be an easy candidate to take out," Alford said. "I think there are rays of hope for Democrats, but I'm not sure Jeff Landry is going to be as vulnerable as some folks are hoping."

The election for governor and other Louisiana state offices will take place on October 9, 2027.
