The Louisiana Senate Race is heating up. While Senator Bill Cassidy is the incumbent in the race and previously enjoyed healthy approval ratings, JMC Analytics’ John Couvillon told WWL’s Dave Cohen that Cassidy is vulnerable in this election according to recent data. Couvillon sees the inflection point in Cassidy’s political career happening after Cassidy voted for the conviction of President Trump. “January 2021 after Bill Cassidy got comfortably re-elected in 2020 seeking President Trump’s support, he then turned around and voted for the conviction of President Trump,” Couvillon illustrated.

In terms of challengers to Cassidy, Couvillon sees current State Treasurer John Fleming as his stiffest competition. According to Couvillon’s own polling, Fleming is enjoying a rather comfortable lead over Cassidy. “If you look purely at registered Republicans, which is the base of those who would vote in April, Dr. Fleming’s lead stretches to  a 42-29 lead. So, the biggest issue for Dr. Cassidy is that, no matter how I polled him in various configurations, he was stuck in the low to upper 20’s.
That’s pretty bad for a two-term incumbent senator,” explained Couvillon.

As far as other candidates who may shake up the race are concerned, Couvillon doesn’t see much more runway left for them to gain meaningful leverage in this election. “Any serious candidate really needs to be jumping in right about now. Not just because of the time it takes to raise money … but, to me, the clock to get in this race is really running out,” he added.
