US Senator Bill Cassidy is reportedly asking Louisiana Democrats to consider re-registering to vote as Republicans, so they can vote for him in the upcoming closed primary.
With polls showing a very tight race in the Republican primary for Senate, LAPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says he's not surprised any candidate will do whatever they can to gain an advantage.
"He needs something to kind of get him over the finish line and gain a little bit of momentum and this looks like one of the strategies they're trying," said Alford.
Alford says Cassidy's angle appears to be that since a Republican is likely to win the Senate race no matter who is nominated, this is the best way for Democrats to have a say in the matter.
"He's reaching out to Democratic voter and kind of letting them know that whoever emerges from this Republican primary is more than likely going to be our next U.S. Senator," Alford said.
Why would Republican Bill Cassidy woo Louisiana Democrats during primary season?
