The Louisiana Supreme Court says it will decide soon whether the new law combining New Orleans' civil and criminal clerks of court into one office is constitutional, and if it is, whether or not it created a new office that would require an interim appointment until voters could decide.
Our partners at NOLA.com report the court also blocked the council's appointee from performing any duties of the office pending their ruling.
The council this week appointed retired Criminal District Court Judge Calvin Johnson as an interim replacement.
The Supreme Court's order keeps Civil District Court Clerk Chelsea Napoleon in office in the meantime.
