We have been enjoying some low gas prices this summer, and trends show prices could drop to lows not seen in four year. However, the imminent peak of hurricane season can mess that up.
"It would absolutely reverse any kind of downward trend that we have right now," said AAA analyst Don Redman.
Redman says even with gas station owners skittish about getting into hot water with authorities over alleged price gouging, a named storm in the gulf's rig region will cause prices to jump.
"We've seen prices skyrocket any time there's a storm come in," he said. "On the market I've seen them increase by a dollar a gallon."
Luckily, the system that is bringing rain to the New Orleans area today remains unorganized, and Redman says if you want to get in one last summer road trip, now's the time.
